Julie Otto

Julie Otto

Julie Otto, creator of Julie’s Puppet Creations, experiments with the use of larger than life puppets in her shows, including marionettes, hand and rod puppets. Influenced by the use of Big Eyed Jack, her Grandfather’s duck marionette, her love affair with puppets began. Growing up in San Diego, Julie visited nursing homes and daycares with her mother performing shows with dancing marionettes. At 24 years of age, Julie attended her first puppet show, The Wonderful World of Puppets Around the World by Big Joe Productions, at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater in Balboa Park. Joining the guild after she’d seen her first show, she volunteered to help with Something’s Fishy, a production performed by Millie Patterson, creator of Weaver’s Tales. Gaining her experience from this event she decided produce her first show, Whispers of the Forest, to be performed at the Marie Hitchcock Theater.

Graduating from San Diego State University in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Fibers, Julie integrates some of her use of fiber techniques in the creation of some of her puppets. Volunteering at various elementary schools she has taught art to children incorporating the use of puppets into the curriculum. When she is not working with puppets, Julie works with the use of various fiber techniques to create her art and is the owner of Jewels of Friendship, a company currently selling hand-made merchandise at renaissance fairs.
